Parent Letter for the Fourth Quarter

March 25, 2013

RE: Fourth Quarter Research Paper

Dear Parents and Students,

This is the Fourth Quarter—WOOHOO!!! You have almost made it through 9th grade! This quarter in the Socratic class, we will be writing a Research Paper using the MLA format. Your student has already been given many hand-outs on the MLA format. I will have some additional materials on the classroom blogsite. We will be writing this research paper in stages. The following is a list of the pieces of the research project and when each part is due.

Pick a Research Question (50 points)                                       Due: April 10

Research note cards and Works Cited page (50 points)   Due: April 18

Notes and Outline with in-text citations (50 points)          Due: May 1

First Draft (50 points)                                                                     Due: May 15

Final Paper (100 points)                                                                 Due: May 22

I will be trying to review the steps for writing a research paper. Each step is worth 50 points with the final paper worth 100 points. It is important for the students to accomplish each step in order to have a completed research paper which is acceptable and well-done for this class. It will be necessary for your student to spend some time at a local library or to visit the BYU Library in order to do research for this paper. Please let me know if this is a problem for your student.

We will also be reading and studying Beowulf this quarter. We will begin the reading on April 11th and continue until the final test on Beowulf which will be on May 14th and the Epic Poem Project which will be due on May 9th.

The test dates for this quarter will be:

Test on China and Islam                                                T, April 16

Test on Charlemagne                                     Th, May 2

Test on Beowulf                                               T. May 14

Test on Medieval History                              T, May 21

FINALS                                                                  May 24-29

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Thank you for your support!

Marianna Richardson
