Third Quarter Term Paper

This writing assignment will be a compare and contrast paper. You will compare and contrast one aspect of American culture with one aspect of Roman culture. Some ideas are:

·         The Roman Republic versus the American Republic

·         Roman clothes versus American clothes

·         Roman social structure versus American social structure

·         The way Roman men treated women versus the way women are treated in the USA today

·         Roman politics versus American politics

·         The Roman military versus the American military

There should be some research done on Roman culture. You should cite at least TWO SOURCES and use citations as needed. 

The final draft of this paper should be AT LEAST three pages typed-written pages (12 pt. font) and double spaced.

Project Ideas

1.       Draw pictures of five of the main characters. Write a character description for each one attached to the pictures.

2.       Draw a map of the island. Include a written description of your map and why you made the island this way.

3.       Make a diorama showing some aspect of the book—their shelter, a scene from the book, or an action in the book. Write a paper describing your diorama.

4.       Watch the 1963 or 1990 movie, Lord of the Flies. Write a paper comparing and contrasting the differences and similarities between the book and movie.

5.       Research the life of William Golding. Write a paper about him and describe any life experiences of the author seen in the book.

6.       Why did Golding write about boys. Write a paper about how you think the story would have been different if it was written with all girls or boys and girls.

7.       Collect newspaper articles showing man being inhumane and man being civilized and showing good will. Write a paper about your newspaper articles illustrating both sides of human nature and illustrations from the LOTF book. Come to a conclusion—is man basically good or bad?

8.       Write a paper focusing on one of the symbols in the novel. Explain what the symbol means and give at last THREE illustrations from the book of how it is used as a symbol.

9.       Make a video of a part of the book. This can be as a group project or as an individual. Each person must write a paper describing the significance of the scene and what they learned from the project.

10.   Write a theme paper about one of the major themes of the book citing examples and quoting from the book.

Pick one book—Fiction or Non-fiction—about one of the civilizations we are studying this year. The civilizations are: Mesopotamia, Babylon, Assyria, Phoenicia, Greece, Israel, Persia, Rome, China, Mid-East, Medieval Europe. **There are some books in the school library which can be used for this report! WOOHOO!!! It is time to start again for our second semester together!!!
It should be a great semester.
Please remember to use this blog site to help you know when things are due.
Third quarter there are THREE major long term projects:
1. Third Quarter Term Paper - This writing assignment will be a compare and contrast paper. You will compare and contrast one aspect of American culture with one aspect of Roman culture. You should pick a subject by TH, 2/7; Draft is due by TH, 3/7; FINAL PAPER due by 3/20.
2. Civilization Book Report - You will pick one book - Fiction or Non-Fiction - about one of the civilizations we are studying, will study, or have studied. The book must be cleared with me first! Pick a book by 2/12 and final report due 3/12.
3. Lord of the Flies Project. There are many project ideas for this. You project is due, T, 2/26.
We will review these long term paper in class and the particulars will be posted on the website.
Weekly, you will have readings, one writing assignment, and a vocabulary list.
I know you can do this!
Please know that I am always at school after classes every day if you need some extra help or support.
